Final Fantasy: When Talent and Technology Was Just Not Enough

As the industry presses on with the need to meet ever greater challenges and to create images that have never been seen before, this case study from Muqeem Khan addresses the groundbreaking work undertaken to make the lavish visual delight of Final Fantasy — The Spirits Within. Muqeem will discuss the VFX, animation and interaction design and also will share the unseen footage from the project created by Square Pictures.

Muqeem Khan is an academician, interaction designer, musician and a visual effects artist. His motion picture credits with Walt Disney and Square USA include: Deep Rising, George of the Jungle, Flubber, Armageddon and Final Fantasy — the spirits within. He has a Master of Arts in Industrial Design from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio and is currently a Ph.D. researcher at UNSW Art & Design. His research looks at capturing and analyzing body movements with the use of motion detecting technologies in the context of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Muqeem has taught interactive design, graphic design, interior design and concepts for emerging technologies at Virginia Commonwealth University and Northwestern University (Qatar). He has taught 2D/3D animation classes for over 12 years and has been a speaker at a variety of international conferences including TED@Doha Summit and the International Games Innovation Conference in New York.

Cost: Free for Sydney ACM SIGGRAPH members in good financial standing. $5 cover charge for guests and non-members.
