Back by popular demand, Barry Dean – former lead artist with Disney – presents a digital drawing workshop showcasing Wacom’s new Inkling, a digital sketch pen that captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper.

Special Guest Presentation:
Daniel Heckenberg with Quill: Birds of a Feather Tool

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole features over 60 distinctive, art-directed, hyper-realistic feathered characters. Animal Logic developed a procedural feathering pipeline, Quill, that allows a procedural representation of feathers with automatic de-intersection, animation, character effects, and dynamics, and rendered with extensive level-of-detail support. Daniel presented this talk on Quill at the recent SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver.

A screening of the third and final portion of the Electronic Theatre presentation from the ACM SIGGRAPH 2011 Conference held in Vancouver, Canada will follow immediately after Daniel’s (approximately 20 minute) presentation.

Special Guest Presentation to proceed Electronic Theatre presentation:
Joey Hegarty, Software Developer from Animal Logic’s R&D team will be presenting his Siggraph talk Volumetric Effects in a Snap

The twenty minute talk will describe how and why Animal Logic created Snap, a grid-based simulation and volumetric rendering framework used in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Sucker Punch.

A screening of the second portion of the Electronic Theatre presentation from the ACM SIGGRAPH 2011 Conference held in Vancouver, Canada will then follow.

What’s it all about:
Steve is a senior TD currently working in look development and lighting at Animal Logic. He studied Computer Science at UTS where he produced a short animation – Bin Can Can – which screened at numerous festivals worldwide, including the Siggraph Electronic Theatre in 2002. After working in web development, he moved to Animal Logic in 2003 to spend almost four years working in various capacities on the Academy Award-winning Happy Feet. His other credits include 28 Weeks Later, Australia, Knowing and Legend of the Guardians. As a TD he specialises in shader and tool development, lighting and compositing

What’s it all about:
Ben is a matte painter currently working at Animal Logic. He has previously worked at The People’s Republic of Animation and attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in 2007. His feature film credits include Australia, Knowing, Legend of the Guardian’s and Sucker Punch. He has worked on video games and commercials at the People’s Republic of Animation and worked as a tutor and lecturer in digital media at the University of South Australia.

In 2010 he was part of the matte painting team that was the recipient of the VES award for outstanding matte paintings in commercial or broadcast in the Animal Logic TVC Emerald Cities (2009)

His strengths lie in 3D/2.5D matte paintings and photography.

Niki Bern is a compositor/VFX Artist who has worked at Digital Domain, Animal Logic, Weta Digital, Rising Sun Pictures, Framestore-CFC. Her film credits include: Harry Potter& The Goblet of Fire, The Quiet American, Happy Feet, Stealth, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, King Kong, Speed Racer, Avatar, Legend of the Guardians, Tron Legacy.
